  105. I finally got this bloody thing to run (a learning experience).  To summarize,
  106. I have a GUSMAX.  I tried sbos... didn't work.  Tried maxsbos.... didn't work
  107. Tried Megaem.. ahha, works, but after 3 minutes my computer freezes or reboots.
  108.  
  109. So I said to myself "This 'soundblaster clone' doesn't work very well, let's
  110. try the others..".  Sure enough, set it to Soundblaster Pro and it works 
  111. perfectly!!!  No lockups, no nothing.  Sound works fine.

  113. My config is as follows.

  115. Just put in emm386 with the noems option, load up megaem 3.03 :-), don't
  116. need the GF1 support, so I nuked it, and VOILA!
  117.  
  118. Still would like native support tho.  Damn music taking up cpu cycles...

  140. I had it too as I installed v3.59.
  141. But I solved it:
  142. You have to change the GUS IRQ under windows.
  143. And ONLY under windows. Yes, I mean it! You have to change it 
  144. only in your system.ini in [ultrasnd.ini] section:
  145. gf1_int=7
  146. midi_int=7
  147. It has to be 7 or so. (7 works for me)
  148. My GUS is: 220,x,x,11,7
  149. In Windows I set it to: 220,x,x,7,7.
  150. EVERYTHING works fine. (I haven't tried Visual C++,
  151. but Borland C 4.5 works fine)
  152. Give it a try.

  187. GUS ACE works fine on its own, if you don't need joystick, external MIDI 
  188. interface, CD-ROM interfaces, or any kind of recording. (I don't have 
  189. one, but I have heard from one guy who was using it stand-alone). It's 
  190. definitely not a daughterboard.

  192. It has 512K ram same as I think the max does, so if you don't need those 
  193. features I just mentioned, it's the best deal. (a *lot* cheaper).

  195. The cards are called Gravis Ultrasound, ("Gravis Ultrasound 3d" from some
  196. places), Gravis Ultrasound MAX, and Gravis Ultrasound ACE. If you get a
  197. standard GUS (preferably don't bother), look out for the revision numbers,
  198. as a 2.x card (like the oollldd one we've got) won't run protected mode
  199. mega-em. You need 3.x. (all MAX and ACE are 3.x).

  201. You should be able to check what you're buying by the price, anyway. I 
  202. think ACE is $99 retail, GUS about $120, MAX about $160 ish. (but I'm in 
  203. UK so can't confirm this).

  205. By the way, original GUS does have one advantage as it's the only card 
  206. that uses the standard DRAM chips, which you can pinch from old video 
  207. cards, and they're also easy to buy otherwise. The other cards use some 
  208. weird type of chip.

  227. memory for me. (512k->1m).  You did say it (the GUS max) used strange 
  228. memory chips, right?  So, I couldn't just buy them myself somehow, from

  254. You can buy them yourself. They're only "strange" in that they're not 
  255. "normal" SIMMs or DRAM chips that are commonly found in computer 
  256. equipment. Unfortunately, I don't know the part number, but I saw it on 
  257. comp.sys.ibm.pc.soundcard.something recently, or else here, so someone 
  258. knows! :)

  274. Basically I upgraded the ultrasound 3.1 disks to 3.59 and now I cant get
  275. mortal Combat II to have any sound effects, the music is still there but thats it.

  290. Has anyone got digital sound and/or music to work properly with the
  291. CDRom game USS Ticonderoga.The speech sounds VERY choppy, so
  292. much so it's almost impossible to understand and it's basically the same
  293. quality for the music portion. The only things it supports are
  294. Soundblaster/Pro/16 kinda limited for such a new game. The only way it
  295. works at all for me is by using Megaem 3.03b, or SBOS -o4, nothing else
  296. works.. I'm using a regular Gravis Ultrasound with 1meg... can anyone
  297. help?

  305.      I tried installing ProPats 3.0 and having it replace all the
  306. recommended patch files.  The only problem is, after I get them replaced, I
  307. can't play the ENTERTNR.MID file that comes with the GUS software.  Most of
  308. it is okay but it sounds like one of the instruments just disappeared and
  309. there is no sound in place of it.  It played perfectly fine with the
  310. original GUS patches that came with the software.  Anyone have any idea as
  311. to what's wrong and how to fix it?  Thanks.

  349.     There is no need to "go get a real sound blaster".  Just use
  350. SBOS!  I noticed the same slowness using GUS, but using SBOS there is
  351. no problem.  And note, there is no loss of sound quality by going to
  352. SBOS, as the audio over the entire CD is all together low quality.

  360. Just bought a SB16 to add to my system. I'm running os/2 in addition to 
  361. windows 3.1 and need some suggestions on how to set the dma/irq settings 
  362. for both cards. I'm adding a printer to my setup soon as well, so I'm 
  363. apparantly not going to be able to utilize IRQ7 in os/2 and probably 
  364. windows.

  366. Currently, I have the Gus using IRQs 5 for Midi and 11 in dos, windows 
  367. and os/2. (I'm using the Manley drivers, if that makes a difference, in 
  368. os/2, v7a and its a 1 meg GUS. Not a Gus Max, a regular 1 meg gus.) I 
  369. wanted to use the SB16 for winos2 sessions for obvious reasons and as the 
  370. "primary" (if that makes sense) sound card under os/2. I want to also be 
  371. able to use the sb16 for various games that support it, but use 
  372. emulations for the gus to emulate the roland mt32 card. Is all of this 
  373. possible with the 2 cards? Which port/DMA/IRQ settings should I set the 
  374. Gus/SB16 to in order to accomplish all of this?
